How HIFU works
High-intensity focused ultrasound deposits energy at a precise depth without touching the layers above it. The target is the SMAS, the fibromuscular sheet a surgeon repositions in a facelift. Heating it to a controlled temperature causes immediate contraction of existing collagen and starts a slow rebuilding process underneath. The skin surface is never broken, which is why there is nothing to hide afterwards.
What it improves
Loss of jawline definition, early jowls, a heavy brow and mild sagging of the mid-face. On the neck it works on the soft banding that appears with age. It is the strongest non-surgical option for laxity that has begun but is not yet advanced. If the laxity is severe, no device replaces surgery — and Aurora will say so at the consultation rather than sell you three sessions that cannot deliver.
Session and recovery
Sixty to ninety minutes depending on the areas. You feel brief pulses of deep heat, sharper along the jaw and the hairline where tissue is thinner; it is uncomfortable in moments rather than painful throughout, and it stops with the pass. Skin may look slightly flushed or feel tender to the touch for a day or two. Everything else is normal from the moment you leave. The lift builds over eight to twelve weeks as new collagen matures, and holds for around a year.

Depth is the whole treatment. Aurora changes cartridge and depth by zone — the plane that works on a jawline would be wrong under the eye — and maps the shot pattern before starting rather than covering the face uniformly. She also sets expectations with a timeline: nothing dramatic happens in week one, and anyone promising an instant facelift from ultrasound is describing a different treatment.

Safety, side effects and aftercare
What to expect
Light flushing on the day. Tenderness to pressure along the treated line for one to three days, and occasionally a tingling sensation that comes and goes for a couple of weeks as tissue remodels. Small bruises are uncommon but possible along the jaw.
When we don't treat
Not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active infection or open lesions, over metal implants or a pacemaker in the treatment field, on skin with active severe acne in the area, or where fillers have been placed very recently — spacing between the two is planned at the consultation.
Aftercare
Nothing to restrict on the day beyond the obvious: SPF 50 and no direct sun on treated skin. Avoid sauna and very hot environments for forty-eight hours. Results depend on the collagen you build over the following weeks, so hydration and sleep matter more here than any cream.

Frequently asked questions
Is HIFU the same as a facelift?
No, and it is important to be clear about that. It tightens what is already there and stimulates new collagen, which reads as a lift on mild to moderate laxity. Advanced sagging needs surgery, and we say so rather than sell sessions that cannot reach that result.
When will I see it?
Not immediately. Some tightening is felt in the first weeks, but the visible change builds from week eight and peaks around three months. That timeline is the treatment working, not a delay.
Does it work on darker skin?
Yes. Ultrasound is not absorbed by melanin, so unlike many lasers it carries the same profile across skin tones — one of the reasons it suits this region.
Can I combine it with Botox or fillers?
Yes, with planning. HIFU usually comes first and injectables follow two weeks later, so the heat does not act on freshly placed product.
