Same product, two different designs
Russian lips and classic lip filler are not two products. Both are done with the same material: premium hyaluronic acid filler, which is what we use at Coconut Botox Tulum to add volume, define the lip border, correct asymmetry and hydrate lips that have lost plumpness. What changes is the design — where the volume ends up and what the lip looks like once it has settled. That is why “which one is better?” has no answer on its own. The useful question is which one fits the mouth you already have.
Both are on our lip filler menu, next to two options people tend to forget: a subtle lip flip, and dissolving old filler before starting again. This guide goes through all four, so you arrive at the consultation knowing what to ask.
What classic augmentation does
Classic augmentation favours projection. Seen from the side, the lip comes forward; seen from the front, it looks fuller and better hydrated, with a cleaner border. It is what most people picture when they say “lip filler”, and it is the natural choice when the request is lips that look like yours on a good day: rested, defined, a little plumper.
Classic does not mean big. A subtle 0.5 ml refresh and a full 1 ml design are completely different treatments, and both are done here with the same precision.
What Russian lips do
The Russian technique favours height and a flat profile. Instead of bringing the lip forward, the design lifts it: the cupid’s bow is more defined, more lip shows from the front, and the profile stays flatter. The result is often described as doll-like, with a lifted look. It is a more designed, more noticeable shape than a classic refresh, and that is the point of it.
It is flattering on some mouths and not on all. That is exactly why it is decided in person and not from a photo.

The mirror test: front and profile
A simple way to work out what you are actually asking for: look at your lips from the front, then from the side. If what bothers you is that the lip disappears in profile, or looks thin and dry, you are describing projection and hydration, and that is classic territory. If what you want is more visible lip from the front and a sharper cupid’s bow, and you would rather not add anything to your profile, you are describing height — which is what the Russian technique is for.
Plenty of people find they want a little of each. The two names are shorthand for a direction, not two closed boxes, and the plan is drawn for your lips rather than for a label.
How the decision is made
Before proposing anything, Aurora Estrada, derma specialist in cosmetics with more than 20 years of experience, studies your lip anatomy, how much tooth you show and the proportions of your facial thirds. The product, the quantity and the placement are chosen for those proportions, not for a trend. In practice, the consultation may confirm the technique you came in asking for, suggest the other one, or recommend a smaller amount than you expected.
Overfilled lips come from wrong product placement and excess volume. We build gradually and respect your natural border, and you can always add at a later visit. Bring reference photos if you have them: they are useful for showing the kind of result you like. They are not a template, because the lips in the photo sit on someone else’s face.
Two options people forget
The lip flip. Not every request needs a syringe of filler. The clinic also does subtle lip flips combined with neuromodulator, the same family of product used for Botox. It is a small adjustment rather than an augmentation, and whether it makes sense for you, alone or alongside filler, is part of the consultation.
Dissolving first. If you already have filler from another clinic and it has migrated or feels lumpy, adding a new technique on top is not the answer. We dissolve it with hyaluronidase, let the tissue rest, and rebuild with correct technique. That applies to both styles: a precise design needs a clean starting point.
The appointment is the same for both
Whichever design you choose, the visit looks the same. Numbing cream goes on first, so the session is comfortable. The injection takes about 30 minutes and the whole appointment about 45. You see a result immediately, but it is not the final one: swelling is expected, peaks at 24–48 hours and can last up to 72. Small bruises are common and temporary, and tenderness for a few days is normal. The shape you chose reads around day 14. Results last 8 to 14 months, depending on your metabolism and the product used.
Aftercare is also identical. For 24 hours: no intense exercise, alcohol, sauna or heat. Sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night, and use cold compresses if they help. Keep away from pool chlorine for the first days and avoid dental work for two weeks. You leave with clear written aftercare, and we follow up by WhatsApp.
If you are in Tulum on a trip
Book lip filler at least 3–4 days before a big event or your flight home, so the swelling has settled. If photos matter — a wedding, a shoot — the ideal is 2–3 weeks before, which leaves the lips fully settled and room for a touch-up; our wedding timeline places it alongside everything else. And since heat and the pool are the two things aftercare asks you to skip at first, choose a day when you can stay out of both.
When we don’t do it
Lip filler, in either style, is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active cold sore outbreak (herpes labialis needs prophylaxis first), with an autoimmune condition under flare, or with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine. Tell us about your history and current medication at the consultation; that conversation is what it is for.
What it costs
Lip filler at Coconut Botox Tulum starts at $6,500 MXN per syringe, roughly $375 USD as a reference that moves with the exchange rate. The final figure is set at your complimentary consultation, once the quantity you actually need has been assessed. Cash in MXN or USD and card are accepted, and the full price list is public.
